DIPLOMA IN PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY

Faculty of Medicine (FMPOSUCAD) in Dakar, SENEGAL

We have created the bespoke  FIRST UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA in this subspecialty in Western Africa for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cheick Anta Diôp of Dakar (UCAD, Senegal). The first part took place in 2019. See the PROJECT section below for more detail.

Pediatric ophthalmology specialises in the care, treatment and prevention of visual problems in infancy. Until this master’s degree was created, it was a non-existent subspecialty; it was necessary to go to Northern countries to be educated in this.

PROJECT

PHASE 1 (2014 to 2018) 8 of their teachers were trained (4 & 4) and 4 of them were granted scholarships at the Pediatric Hospital of San Juan de Dios of Barcelona (HSJD) to strengthen their capacities. Bespoke implementation of the eSalud platform to train them digitally. Strengthening their skills in operating rooms and consultations.

PHASE 2 (2019 to 2023) To train their students and accompany their teachers, as well as to continue strengthening their skills in operating rooms and consultations:

  • 1st Edition (2019) 10 trained ophthalmologists (7 and 3) Senegal (7), Burkina Faso (1), Benin (1) and Mali (1).
  • 2nd Edition (2020) 7 ophthalmologists  (3 and 4), Senegal (4), Burkina Faso (1), Mauritania (1) and Mali (1).
  • Until the 5th Edition (2023) To train 7 ophthalmologists per course and support their teachers.

 CONTEXTO Y SITUACIÓN EN SENEGAL 

According to United Nations data (2019), it is among the poorest in the world. It is ranked 166 of 189 countries in the Human Development Index (IDH) the median life expectancy of its population is 67 years and has had one of the highest birth rates in the world with an average of more than 5 children per woman  (higher in rural areas) for more than three decades. The high sustained level of fertility reflects the inequality of gender, the low use of contraceptives, early marriages and maternity, and the lack of education, especially among women. Their GDP per inhabitant in 2018 was  355€/year, in  Spain it was 25,730€, equivalent to  72 times less  than in our country.

VISUAL HEALTH CONTEXT

According to data from the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB-OMS), the prevalence of blindness was estimated at 1.4% in 2018, which equates to 140,000 blind people and 420,000 visually impaired, 75% of these cases being curable or avoidable, being decades of the ratio of 0.15% of our country.
